My MBiol project explores how visual fields change over ontogeny in two ecologically distinct duck species: visually foraging Tufted Ducks (Aythya futigula) and tactile filter-feeding Northern Shovelers (Anas clypeata). By using the ophthalmoscopic reflex technique supported by behavioural trials, I aim to investigate the development of visual field topography in both species from hatching and how this is associated with foraging choices. My project forms part of the first research study to explore the ontogenetic development of visual fields in birds, improving knowledge of how plasticity in visual fields relates to foraging mode throughout development. I am particularly interested in using findings regarding ontogenetic changes in visual fields to provide insight into age-dependent collision vulnerability in birds. Through this research, I aim to inform age-specific conservation strategies — particularly methods of vision-based collision mitigation.
