My MBiol project aims to investigate the visual cues birds use to guide their flight and apply this understanding to develop mitigations against bird collisions with wind turbines. Building on previous work testing the effectiveness of black-and-white stripe patterns, I will investigate for the first time whether chromatic contrast can be equally effective in deterring birds. I will work on diverse species, ranging from Harris hawks to pigeons, and hope to investigate species-specific differences in visual guidance.
In the face of climate change, I hope my MBiol project can help alleviate the negative impacts of wind energy on birds and support the global transition to renewable energy.
